Your early experiences with starting Tutela Prep and what shaped its foundation. Can you tell us about a pivotal moment when technology became central to your approach in education? How did it influence your vision for TutelaPrep?
Tutela Prep was founded to address a significant gap in the educational sector—a lack of ethical, student-centered guidance. A pivotal moment came in 2016-17 when one of the major tests we focused on, the ACT, transitioned online. This shift underscored the importance of technology in reshaping education and solidified our commitment to integrating tech-based solutions. We responded by becoming the first test prep organization to launch our own online practice tests, setting a new standard in the field.
What gaps in the study-abroad education sector did you identify, particularly in terms of technology? How did TutelaPrep address these issues with data-driven insights and AI-based learning tools?
In Tutela Prep’s early days, we realized that standardized tests evaluate not only content knowledge but also the underlying skills required to succeed. While many tools assessed content gaps, few addressed skills-based deficiencies. We developed a multilayered assessment system that identifies both clear errors and subtler areas needing improvement, made possible through data-driven insights. This approach allows us to support students holistically by pinpointing both content and skills gaps.
What were some of the key technological innovations or strategies that contributed to the global expansion of Tutela Prep in over 50 countries?
Our global expansion into over 50 countries has been driven by adaptive and personalized content delivery, balanced with essential human interaction. While technology is central, we believe in the value of emotional support in education. This unique blend of technology and human mentorship has fostered meaningful connections with students worldwide and helped us scale across diverse regions.
Could you elaborate on how you’ve integrated technology to provide personalized mentorship and a more holistic learning experience?
Our multilayer assessment engine for SAT, ACT, and AP exams enables us to identify individual learning gaps precisely. Complementing this technology with human mentorship ensures that students not only learn but also build resilience and confidence. This dual approach—technology for insights, paired with human support—has created a comprehensive and nurturing learning experience for our students.
In the competitive and rapidly evolving ed-tech landscape, how do you ensure TutelaPrep stays relevant? What technologies or approaches do you prioritize to remain innovative?
Remaining relevant in today’s fast-paced ed-tech landscape requires constant innovation. We prioritize research and development, continuously refining our understanding of exams and our users. Regular feedback from all stakeholders—students, parents, teachers, and tech partners—guides our improvements in both operations and technology. With the rise of large language models and AI tools on handheld devices, we are focusing on on-demand, skill-focused content to meet students’ needs in an increasingly tech-driven world.
Looking at global markets like the U.S. and Canada, what are some unique technological challenges and opportunities you foresee in expanding TutelaPrep’s reach there?
In markets like the U.S. and Canada, students often prefer in-person interaction for test prep, though this trend is gradually shifting. By 2030, we foresee this gap closing as virtual interactions become more normalized. The affordability of education is also a critical factor; education costs are generally four times higher in the West than in Asia. We aim to bridge this gap by providing high-quality preparation at an accessible price, creating new opportunities for students in these markets.
What advice would you give to students aspiring to study abroad, especially when it comes to leveraging technology to enhance their learning and exam preparation?
Hard work is irreplaceable, but leveraging technology can be the key to smarter, more effective preparation. Use evolving tech tools as study companions and make decisions based on data-driven insights to optimize your learning journey. Embracing both effort and efficiency will better equip you to succeed in exams and life abroad.
