CXOToday has engaged in an exclusive interview with Raghav Singhal, Executive Director of Om Logistics Limited

  1. How is Om Logistics leveraging advancements in sustainable supply chains, cutting-edge warehousing technologies, and innovative solutions to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving business environment while enhancing supply chain efficiency and resilience?

As the country continues to experience unprecedented shifts in economies, industries and environmental challenges, the spotlight on sustainable supply chains and logistics has never been more crucial. At Om Logistics, we closely monitor the evolving business landscape and have taken proactive measures to adapt and expand in the context of these changes.

These days, customers expect efficient supply chain and logistics solutions. In response, we are actively addressing this demand through our extensive network of over 750 branches, which provides access to over 27,000 pin codes and fleet of 6,000+ GPS-enabled vehicles, ensuring swift and secure nationwide consignment movement. In addition, expectations for Grade A warehouses are another trend and we are well-equipped to meet these demands. With over 25 million sq. ft. of warehousing space across the nation, equipped with state-of-the-art material handling equipment and IT systems, we ensure optimal storage conditions and efficient inventory management. As we are continuously expanding our network, we aim to extend our reach and enhance our ability to deliver exceptional service to customers.

Further, this ever-evolving business scenario has propelled us to innovate. Our strategic approach includes investments in advanced technologies. Innovations such as route optimization, geofencing, integrated bar-code management, real-time online track & trace, API integration and process automation for error-free activities at cross-docks have been instrumental in this transformation. These technological breakthroughs have streamlined our processes and reduced manual intervention, resulting in faster, more cost-effective and more resilient supply chain operations.

  1. With sustainability becoming a focal point in logistics, what specific measures and initiatives has your company implemented to integrate eco-friendly practices into its operations?

As a responsible supply chain and logistics management company, we are deeply committed to environmental sustainability. In alignment with our sustainability goals, we have launched several initiatives aimed at contributing to a greener environment. A key focus has been the adoption of environmentally friendly practices, including the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to curb air pollution and potentially reduce carbon emissions. Several other approaches have also been initiated, such as installing solar panels in our warehouses, maximizing the use of natural light during the day, minimizing waste and using recycled materials.

We firmly believe that safeguarding our environment is not just a moral imperative but also our responsibility. Over the years, we have actively participated in numerous tree-plantation drives as part of our commitment to environmental conservation. Understanding the profound impact of afforestation on biodiversity and climate resilience, we are keen to expand our tree-plantation endeavours even further. By doing so, we aim to play a significant role in creating a sustainable environment.

  1. Considering the growing complexities in the logistics sector, how critical is the role of a skilled workforce, and what programs or strategies has your company adopted to enhance workforce training and development?

Absolutely, there is a significant need for a skilled workforce in the logistics sector. Nowadays customers expect fast, reliable and transparent delivery services. A skilled workforce ensures these expectations are met by optimizing delivery routes, improving inventory management and enhancing customer service. At Om Logistics, we have recognized this critical demand and have implemented several initiatives to address it. A key component of our commitment to excellence is the Om Institute of Logistics & Supply Chain Management, a prominent division of Om Logistics Limited. Om Institute of Logistics & SCM successfully conducts various batches and workshops on logistics and supply chain management. In partnership with esteemed universities, we provide specialized education in logistics management. Apart from this, our Advanced Summer Internship Program offers students practical learning opportunities, industry-relevant education and training experiences, which are crucial for their professional development. Through these initiatives, students examine supply chain strategies and logistics operations, benefiting from a blend of academic excellence and industry expertise. By learning from experienced professionals, students bridge the knowledge gap between theory and application, developing practical skills and knowledge.

Additionally, Om Logistics prioritizes continuous training and development programs for our employees. By investing in the professional growth of our workforce, we enhance operational efficiency and solidify our position as a leader in delivering customized and reliable logistics solutions across India.

  1. How is the logistics sector benefiting from government initiatives such as Gati Shakti, the National Logistics Policy (NLP), and Make in India? What progress do you see in terms of their impact on industry growth and efficiency?

India’s logistics industry is undergoing a major change thanks to government initiatives like Make in India, the National Logistics Policy (NLP) and Gati Shakti. To improve connectivity and lower logistical costs, Gati Shakti focuses on integrating various types of transportation and improving infrastructure development. Meanwhile, the NLP seeks to optimize logistical operations through digital integration, infrastructural improvements and standardized processes. Make in India promotes Indian production, increasing the need for effective logistics systems to enable smooth supply chain integration and distribution throughout the nation.

All of these projects help the logistics industry by enhancing quality and connectivity, which makes it easier and faster to transfer goods from one place to another. It cut operational inefficiencies and total logistics expenses by optimizing logistical operations and utilizing digital technology. For Om Logistics, these initiatives represent opportunities to innovate and expand service capabilities, meeting the evolving demands of industries more effectively, which creates a conducive environment for enhancing service quality, optimizing supply chain operations and contributing to India’s economic development through efficient logistics management.

  1. How would you evaluate the current infrastructure in India for cargo movement? Does it meet the demands of the logistics sector, or do you see significant areas that require improvement?

India’s road infrastructure for cargo movement has shown significant improvement over the past decade, reflecting its pivotal role in the logistics and supply chain sectors. With a notable expansion, India has the second largest road network in the world, enhancing cargo movement. India has also modernized its rail network, introducing high-speed trains and dedicated freight corridors to boost freight efficiency. India also undertakes port development projects like Sagarmala and upgrades major airports with dedicated cargo terminals to handle increasing air cargo volumes. These multimodal infrastructure improvements demonstrate India’s commitment to creating an efficient logistics network to support its growing economy and global trade.

While India’s infrastructure for cargo movement has significantly improved, there is still room for enhancement. Challenges like last-mile connectivity, urban congestion and technology integration need to be addressed. Om Logistics sees the current network favourably, viewing it as a solid foundation for further development and meeting evolving customer needs.

  1. What are your upcoming plans?

Om Logistics will focus on improving efficiency through the use of technology and adopting green logistics practices. Infrastructure development will include increasing warehousing capacity and adding more branches to expand geographically. The company will also enhance the customer experience by providing personalized solutions and improving service quality.  Strategic partnerships and investing in the workforce will further solidify Om Logistics’ position, ensuring it provides comprehensive, innovative and efficient logistics solutions. The company aims to leverage Electric Vehicles (EVs) and other sustainable technologies to reduce its carbon footprint and lead the industry toward a greener future.
