The year witnessed an extraordinary buzz around this transformative technology, sparking polarizing debates and redefining innovation across industries.
Generative AI’s potential was viewed through dual lenses. On one hand, enthusiasts hailed it as a revolutionary force capable of reshaping industries and enhancing human productivity. On the other, sceptics warned of its disruptive potential, raising concerns about job displacement and widening societal inequalities. The duality of its reception highlighted its significance as a “General Purpose” technology, a sentiment echoed by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, who compared AI’s transformative potential to that of electricity and the Internet.

The education sector in India saw the emergence of early “point solutions” driven by Generative AI. These solutions targeted specific use cases, aiming to improve efficiency and enrich the learner experience. Key trends included:

- AI-Generated Lesson Plans: Educators leveraged Generative AI to design lesson plans, create practice questions, and develop engaging learning videos. Teaching decks were also automated, enabling teachers to focus more on pedagogy.
- Vernacular Content: AI bridged language barriers by effortlessly translating content from English into multiple Indian languages, significantly improving accessibility for regional learners.
- AI-Driven Assessments
- Unique Questions: AI enabled the generation of unique, customized questions, reducing instances of cheating and enhancing the accuracy of learner evaluations.
- Automated Grading: Assignments and tests were graded automatically, saving educators valuable time while ensuring consistent evaluations.
- Plagiarism Detection: Generative AI became a critical tool in detecting plagiarism, especially in essays and coding assignments. It could even identify work generated by other AI tools, promoting academic integrity.
