SOGI Collaborates with IIT Roorkee, IIM Bangalore, and NUJS to Create Awareness about the $3 Billion Online Games Industry

The Skilled Online Games Institute (SOGI) has joined forces with prestigious academic institutions, including IIT Roorkee, IIM Bangalore, and NUJS, to spearhead a groundbreaking initiative focused on illuminating the uncharted territories of the $3 billion skilled online games industry. Recognizing the critical need for informed decision-making, SOGI aims to eliminate the “knowledge vacuum” surrounding industry policies by establishing strategic collaborations that generate authentic, research-backed insights.

In response to the infancy of the Indian online games sector and the consequent lack of comprehensive knowledge, SOGI is committed to becoming the central repository for all industry-related information. By leveraging partnerships with renowned institutions, the institute aims to bridge existing informational gaps, fostering an environment where regulators can formulate policies grounded in factual understanding rather than speculation.

The skilled online games industry roped in corporate affairs veteran Amrit Kiran Singh to spearhead SOGI. Singh has led the multinational alcohol industry for over two decades as Chairman of the International Spirits and Wines Alliance of India. Over the past 18 months, he has played a significant role in the government’s appointment of an Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Online Gaming which led to MEITY’s appointment as the nodal ministry for Online Games.

“The Indian Skilled Online Games Industry is a new industry with enormous potential,” says Singh, President of Skilled Online Games Institute. “The size of the online games industry worldwide is almost three times the size of the movie and the music industry taken together, with an estimated turnover of $159.0 Billion versus the movie industry’s turnover of $42 Billion and the music industry’s turnover of $20 Billion in 2020. The online games industry is one of the biggest industries today worldwide. India must partake in this huge industry without shackles to harness its full potential for our country.” he added.

SOGI’s mission extends beyond national borders, with ongoing discussions to establish international partnerships. The institute has initiated dialogues with key ministries, including the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), and the Ministry of Finance. It has presented a compelling case on the inefficacy of advisories against and bans on illegal gambling sites and stressed the necessity for inter-ministerial cooperation to combat this menace.

As part of its comprehensive strategy, SOGI is categorizing global information on all facets of the industry, identifying informational gaps, and conducting research in collaboration with leading global institutions. The goal is to create a robust database accessible to all stakeholders, providing a balanced view of positive and negative aspects to facilitate the development of a well-informed policy framework for the industry.

The research collaborations between SOGI, IIT Roorkee, IIM Bangalore, and NUJS are poised to redefine India’s gaming landscape, offering the much-needed data and insights required for informed decision-making. These partnerships aim to unlock the industry’s potential, foster innovation, and cultivate a responsible and thriving gaming sector that contributes significantly to the nation’s growth.
