“The expanded attack surface, an outcome of extreme digitization, has made our IT environments highly vulnerable.  Managing thousands of devices and applications, which are entry points to attacks, is a nightmare for all CISOs and CIOs. Proactive Threat and Vulnerability Management (TVM) is both a strategy and a shield to strengthen an organization’s cybersecurity defences. A robust TVM program should comprise of Security Architecture Review, Application Security, DevSecOps, Penetration Testing, and Red Teaming, all of which help in addressing security vulnerabilities across people, processes, and technologies. Over the course of time, vulnerability management has evolved from being a tick in the box to an essential activity that impacts businesses in cost savings, continuity, protection of reputation, and risk mitigation and drives business growth and innovation”.

Saurabh Saxena Regional Vice President at OpenText

“In India, there exists a common misconception among employees regarding cyberattacks, they fear that these are inevitable. However, it’s essential to dispel this notion. Most cyberattacks are not highly sophisticated; instead, they exploit human errors. As the threat landscape continues to spiral, organizations must strengthen their cybersecurity framework. That means having the ability to gain visibility across complex IT environments, quickly detect and prevent threats, respond quickly to internal and external threats to understand scope and impact, and comply with information security, regulatory and industry standards.

Cybersecurity should be viewed as a preventive measure. Digital disruptions can result in data loss and hinder online access, making cybersecurity awareness crucial in our tech-driven era. Vigilance in handling emails, passwords, and access is crucial to thwarting attacks. Often, basics like scrutinizing email headers, avoiding suspicious links, and maintaining robust passwords are overlooked which leave an organization vulnerable, especially in the time of AI enabled targeted threats. The growing adoption of cybersecurity insurance signals increased awareness.

To enhance cybersecurity consciousness, companies should prioritize IT hygiene, adopt relevant frameworks, and conduct regular cyber incident mock trials. Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks can inflict significant losses on Indian businesses, but these can often be prevented through cybersecurity awareness and simple verification methods. Finance departments should establish protocols to make it challenging for cybercriminals to succeed in BEC attacks, recognizing that it’s not a question of “if” but “when” these attacks will occur. Awareness remains a potent weapon against cyber threats in India.”

Cybersecurity Awareness month has never been more important than it is today. The increasing complexity of IT environments, matched with an escalating number of cyberthreats and the industry wide skills gap, has heightened the need for both visibility and collaboration in the security space. Many of today’s attackers are well-resourced and have very sophisticated methods. Subsequently, we need a paradigm shift; from a black-box approach to an Open Security model in order to meet them head on.

To catch a cybercriminal, you need to think like one. Similarly, in order to stand a chance against a well-coordinated community of attackers, you need your own well-coordinated community. Open Security encourages collaboration, with information security experts pooling their collective brainpower and sharing code, detection rules and artefacts as they work together to protect IT systems. It’s a joint effort to improve security software for the benefit of the community as a whole rather than the shareholders of one specific software company.

As the threat landscape continues to expand and hackers utilise new technological advancements to take their efforts to the next level, the transparency offered by Open Security will be imperative to keeping businesses safe.”
