Empowering Workplaces Through Tech: A Conversation with Smita Shetty Kapoor, CEO & Co-founder of KelpHR
- How has technology played a role in simplifying the legal complexities of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) initiatives that KelpHR is known for?
KelpHR aims to simplify organisational compliance with the law on Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) along the axes of training, awareness, accessibility and complaint redressal. Our clients often request the creation of distinctive and novel training methods to keep their employees engaged throughout the learning journey.
We have introduced innovative emailers and virtual events to disseminate information effectively, engaging employees in an interactive manner. This approach not only enhances comprehension but also nurtures a culture of sensitivity and inclusivity. Enhancing digital accessibility for Internal Committee (IC) members through online forms and dedicated email addresses has helped us in promoting a seamless reporting process for employees who need to voice their concerns.
To capture employee feedback efficiently, we’ve integrated online pulse check surveys, allowing organizations to gauge the overall sentiment within their workforce and take proactive measures accordingly and are actively exploring the implementation of chatbots as an innovative tool that can be deployed among employees, providing a secure and anonymous channel for sharing experiences and feedback.
By adopting AI-based learning and development modules, we’re also looking at creating immersive environments that simulate real world situations offering a more nuanced experience to the learners. In a bid to streamline case management for sexual harassment complaints, KelpHR is actively looking at developing partnerships with providers specializing in this domain.
- As an advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D, E&I) in workplaces, how does KelpHR leverage technology to promote and foster inclusive environments for its clients?
D, E & I is all about designing unique solutions for unique needs of workforces. Some employee demographics have generational gaps, some have a skewed gender ratio, some are looking at expanding their diverse workforce.
One of the key pillars of KelpHR’s tech-driven approach is data analytics, audits and assessments for organizations.
We collect and analyze diversity and inclusion data. By deciphering this data, we empower organizations to make data-backed decisions, proactively addressing diversity challenges, and identifying opportunities for growth.
In our mission to make D,E, & I training engaging and impactful, we have developed interactive content for our sessions and led trainings through e-learning modules which have the benefits of scale and asynchronicity; apart from robust data collection regarding the course completion and getting learner feedback.
We have used a mix of classroom and game-based learning to address various topics of D,E&I, creating an immersive and enjoyable learning experience. We also incorporate activity-based learning, drawing inspiration from mental health practices to design engaging sessions that foster empathy and understanding.
By utilizing storytelling as a powerful tool, we enable participants to connect emotionally with DEI concepts, encouraging a deeper appreciation for diverse experiences and perspectives.
- With the expansion of KelpHR’s services to include Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) for mental well-being, how does technology facilitate the implementation and effectiveness of these programs?
KelpHR empowers individuals to nurture their mental health from the comfort of their homes using the power of technology. Virtual counselling and nutrition sessions are a part of our EAP offerings.
With virtual workshops; we have been able to transcend geographical boundaries with access to a larger more diverse pool of skilled trainers and mental health experts from various parts of the world. Through digital accessibility, clients can explore diverse counselling modalities, deepening their awareness and understanding of mental health practices. Videos, forms, information, and surveys are made readily available through technology, simplifying the engagement process and facilitating continuous support. This user-friendly approach ensures that individuals can access resources and support whenever needed, promoting a proactive approach to mental well-being.
We’re also in the process of creating Inclusive support groups, facilitated through technology where participants can find solace in knowing that they are not alone in their struggles; building a shared understanding and learning from one another’s journeys.
- As KelpHR prepares to recognize the 25 Safest Workplaces in India through the PoSH Awards®, could you elaborate on how technology has contributed to enhancing the overall safety and security measures within these organizations?
In the digital age, maintaining confidentiality is of utmost importance. Secure data infrastructure plays a crucial role in protecting the organization’s data from unauthorized access, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations, and safeguarding the privacy of employees and stakeholders. One of the primary ways technology has contributed to workplace safety is through the implementation of email filters, which help identify and prevent potentially harmful or malicious content from entering the organization’s communication channels. The integration of apps for surveillance and media control ensures real-time monitoring of critical areas, further bolstering the security infrastructure which has also helped with incident related investigations.
- In line with the aim of redefining best practices of PoSH at the workplace, how does KelpHR utilize technology to proactively identify and address potential issues related to sexual harassment, fostering a safe and respectful work environment for employees?
KelpHR offers comprehensive and interactive e-learning modules on PoSH, ensuring that all employees receive proper training and awareness about what constitutes sexual harassment and the appropriate channels to report incidents. These training sessions can be tailored to specific job roles, ensuring maximum relevance and effectiveness.
We’re also looking into solutions that will enable us to use technology to track and enforce compliance with PoSH policies within the organization. Other than this we’re constantly looking for ways we can integrate technology and AI based models for more innovative solutions in fostering safe, happy and inclusive environments for all employees.
- As KelpHR collaborates with various organizations, how does technology enable them to tailor HR practices and solutions to meet the unique needs of each client?
Technology plays a pivotal role for us. At KelpHR we follow an adaptive approach which is vital for us to apply since each client is different, their industries are different and they’re at different stages of their PoSH, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and EAP journeys. We collaborate closely with all our clients to develop tailored HR solutions.
Virtual walkthroughs provide a deeper understanding of workplace dynamics and allow for remote assessments. E-learning courses and other activities deliver flexible and personalized training experiences, catering to employees’ diverse learning preferences and schedules.
We also recognize that one size doesn’t necessary fit all and not all clients may be fully tech-oriented or have equal access to advanced technologies. In such cases, KelpHR looks at employing low-tech interventions to ensure inclusivity. Theatre-based sessions, classroom training, and case studies offer interactive and engaging learning experiences that resonate with diverse audiences.
- Can you share insights into any innovative tech tools or platforms that KelpHR has adopted to enhance its services and impact in the HR and well-being domain?
By leveraging digital art tools, gamified learning and development (L&D), online newsletters, and creating online surveys, we are actively enhancing our delivery solutions. These technological advancements enable us to offer a more engaging and interactive learning experience, gather valuable feedback from our clients, and continuously improve our offerings.
A notable initiative in our portfolio is the KelpHR PoSH Awards® – Top 25 Safest Workplaces in India, which stands as our flagship property now in its 4th edition. - As KelpHR looks to expand its offerings and impact, how do they envision leveraging technology to shape and influence workplaces across industries and beyond?
KelpHR is looking at AI and data analytics to gain deeper insights into workplace dynamics. By analyzing employee feedback, and organizational metrics, we should be able to identify trends, patterns, and potential areas of improvement for workplaces and across industries.
