Inflexor Ventures Driving Impactful Change Through Innovative Startups

CXOToday has engaged in an exclusive interview with Parmi Doshi, Associate Vice President, Inflexor, and Dr. Renuka Diwan, Bioprime Agrisolutions

•  Could you elaborate on the criteria or key factors that guide your selection process when considering startups for investment, particularly in the agritech sector?
Inflexor Ventures prioritizes agritech startups with innovative business models and strong technological foundations. While existing models have successfully addressed market linkages and cost reduction in inputs and capital, they often lack a substantial technological innovation and advantage.
We focus on B2B solutions that offer significant intellectual property and innovation, such as BioPrime, which is a deep science play specializing in enhancing crop yield and resilience through innovative biomolecules and microbes. Other innovative business models in the agritech sector utilize advanced technologies such as computer vision and machine learning for quality assessment, predictive data analytics for crop health insights, and genetic breeding solutions providing nature-identical, cell-derived alternatives to dairy products.
•  As an investor, what long-term vision does Inflexor Ventures have for its agritech portfolio companies like BioPrime Agrisolutions, especially in terms of scalability, sustainability, and societal impact?

Our goal for BioPrime Agrisolutions is to evolve into a prominent B2B / B2B2C-focused tech platform, continuously innovating biological solutions. Our vision for BioPrime is to be the leading organized player in India’s biological segment, with a substantial footprint in international markets. This entails offering proprietary formulations to enterprises on both exclusive and non-exclusive bases, as well as developing customized solutions to meet specific customer needs.BioPrime’s success will be measured not only by its financial growth and intellectual capabilities but also by its contribution to sustainability and societal welfare. Through both B2C and B2B2C models, BioPrime will play a vital role in empowering farmers. By enhancing crop yields, reducing plant mortality rates, and lowering input costs despite adverse weather conditions like droughts and high temperatures, BioPrime will enable farmers to thrive in challenging environments. In doing so, it will make a significant and positive societal impact, fostering agricultural resilience and improving livelihoods in rural communities.

•   Given the recent green light from the government for the commercialization of BioPrime’s high-performance microbial strains, could you elaborate on the specific benefits these strains offer to farmers?

With the recent green light from the government for the commercialization of BioPrime’s high-performance microbial strains, it’s crucial to understand the specific benefits these strains offer to farmers. At BioPrime, our selection criteria for commercialized microbes are stringent, ensuring that only the most effective strains make it to market. In India, where phosphate deficiency poses a significant challenge to agricultural productivity, our phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSBs) play a vital role. Unlike commercially available microbes that focus on mobilizing phosphorus from simple sources, our strains excel in the most stringent conditions, mobilizing phosphorus from complex sources like aluminum, iron, and rock phosphates, even in buffered environments.Derived from harsh environments, these strains are 3X-4X more potent in activity, exhibit superior survival capabilities, and establish strong associations with plants. This translates to better, more consistent, and fast-acting products for farmers, delivering reliable, reproducible results across various crops and regions. By reducing input costs, improving yields, and enhancing soil productivity, BioPrime’s technology contributes significantly to the national goal of doubling farmer incomes.

•  What are some of the key challenges currently being faced by the agricultural sector in India, and how BioPrime’s technology addresses these challenges?”

One of the primary challenges facing the agricultural sector in India is climate variability. Heat waves and unseasonal rains have become increasingly frequent and severe, leading to significant yield losses of up to 25-30% annually. BioPrime’s SNIPR technology, based on small biomolecules, offers a solution to mitigate climate-related risks. These biomolecules are carefully selected to activate and regulate specific pathways in crops, ensuring resilience even in the most challenging conditions. By safeguarding yields, SNIPR provides farmers with guaranteed incomes every year.

Furthermore, BioPrime’s Bionexus microbes play a crucial role in replenishing soil microbial biodiversity lost due to environmental stressors. By restoring the microbiome of crops, these microbes contribute to improved soil health and overall agricultural sustainability.

•  How does Bioprime continue to stay at the forefront of agricultural biotechnology advancements?

At BioPrime, our commitment to innovation is driven by our close proximity to farmers and their challenges. We focus on addressing significant problems where existing solutions are inadequate or unsustainable, aiming to create large-scale impact. Our multidisciplinary team of scientists brings decades of experience in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, and natural product chemistry. Collaborating with universities and organizations globally, we leverage cutting-edge research and technology to drive continuous advancements in agricultural biotechnology.

Moreover, BioPrime’s expert advisory council, comprising leaders in technology from around the world, provides invaluable insights and guidance, ensuring that our innovations remain at the forefront of agricultural biotechnology. Bioprime also works in partnerships with some of the largest Ag input corporations of the world, who bring in their decades of experience along with valuable insights.  By staying true to our mission of delivering sustainable solutions to farmers, BioPrime continues to lead the way in shaping the future of agriculture.
