50% of Gig Workers Interested in Full-Time Employment Despite Rising Demand Reveals CIEL Report

  • Uncertain Nature of Work and lack of Social Security are the major hurdles.

CIEL HR ServicesIndia’s leading holistic talent solutions provider, has released a research report shedding light on the current state of gig work in the country. The study, based on a comprehensive analysis, highlights that a significant number of gig workers (50%) expressed their interest to pursue full-time employment. While gig work has gained popularity as an alternative form of employment, it appears that a considerable number of gig workers view it as a temporary or transitional phase in their careers, with the intention of eventually securing a more permanent full-time position.

According to the research, among the various factors influencing individuals’ decision to pursue Gig Work, two prominent motivations stand out:

(a)   Opportunity to engage in diverse projects

(b)   Freedom associated with being their own boss

Gig work empowers individuals to take control of their professional lives, make independent decisions, and set their own work schedules. The study further revealed that both male (41%) and female (40%) respondents shared a strong interest in working on different projects. This suggests that gig workers, regardless of gender, appreciate the opportunity to engage in diverse

work experiences.

Despite all these attractions associated with Gig Work, stability remains a major concern for Gig Workers. The biggest challenge gig workers face is the uncertain nature of their employment, with 32% of respondents highlighting this issue. This points to the lack of stability and predictability that gig workers often experience, such as uncertain project opportunities or fluctuating work hours. Lack of Social Security (24%) is another key Challenge that Gig Workers face, leaving them financially vulnerable.

Another key finding of the report reveals more than half (57%) of the employers participating in the study expressed their intent to increase the proportion of gig workers within their workforce by the fiscal year 2024.

“We are witnessing a paradigm shift in the world of work, with gig employment becoming increasingly popular among employers due to its advantages including cost-effectiveness, scalability, and access to specialised skills. However, gig workers are focusing on stability now more than ever. It is evident that while gig work offers unique advantages, these workers are attracted towards job security and benefits that traditional employment offers. As we move forward, it’s essential for businesses to strike a balance between leveraging the benefits of gig employment and recognising the growing importance of providing stability and growth opportunities for the workforce,” says Aditya Narayan Mishra, MD & CEO at CIEL HR.

The comprehensive study is based on responses from 400+ organisations pan India, across Industry sectors, and 1200+ white collar gig workers encompassing a diverse range of age groups, gender, years of experience and geographical locations.
