Bengaluru, 06th April 2023: Careernet, India’s leading talent solutions provider, has released a report “Moving towards Equality – an overview of the hiring trends in 2022” which highlighted Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai as sunshine cities with more than 30% female hires across industries.

While the findings from the study reveal that Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai are the top three cities in terms of employing female candidates, with 33%, 32%, and 31% of their hires being women, respectively, Delhi-NCR hired the least female workforce among Tier-1 cities, at only 22% of the overall. Significantly, the average percentage of total women candidates hired saw a steep drop outside of Tier-1 cities, from 31% to 12.5%.

The report also accentuates the key employment sectors recording significant hiring in India including GICs/GCCs – BFSI; GICs/GCCs – Telecom/Manufacturing/Automobile; IT Services; Domestic Enterprises (Retail/Engineering/Manufacturing/Pharmaceuticals, etc.), and BFSI. However, the Indian startup ecosystem has the lowest hiring rate for women at only 22%.

To conduct the analysis, Careernet gathered data from a variety of sources, including employers’ career portals and internal data, and measured the month-on-month hiring trends. The company studied the data of the calendar year 2022 to analyse hiring sentiments across a comprehensive range of experience levels and industries, spread over 6 cities (Tier-1) across India. It studied a sample size of approximately 16,000 placements in 2022.

Careernet’s internal data revealed that the number of female candidates placed is on a healthy upward trend over the past few years. In the year 2022, every 3rd candidate placed was a woman.

In terms of experience levels, the highest proportion of women being recruited in 2022 was among freshers, at 35% of total campus recruitments. The hiring of female candidates at entry level (0-3 years) and mid-level (3-7 years) constitutes 27% of the total hires in their respective bands. However, a serious impediment to the job market is the proportion of women placed in senior-level positions (17%) which trails significantly behind lower experience levels.

Commenting on the report, Mr. Anshuman Das, CEO and Co-founder, Careernet, said, “We believe that women are an integral part of the workforce, and their participation is crucial for the growth and development of our country. Closing the gender gap in the workforce is not just a moral imperative but also makes good business sense. By creating employment opportunities for women and supporting their entry into traditionally male-dominated industries, we can not only drive economic growth but also promote gender equality. The government’s initiatives to provide impetus to industries have been instrumental in creating a favourable environment for the growth of the women workforce. The industry sentiment towards hiring women candidates continues to be positive, and we are optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for women in various job roles. In particular, we anticipate a high demand for women in the technology, banking, services, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors.”

The findings indicate that in-demand job roles for female candidates include Software Architect, Accounting and Finance, DevOps Engineer, Application Developer, Automation Developer, Big Data, Business Analyst, Cloud Computing, Data Scientist, HR, Administration, Tutors, Content Writer, and Marketing and Research.

The hiring trends for women candidates across experience levels in different cities indicate Pune, Bangalore, and Chennai as the top locations for female freshers in 2022. The highest proportion of female candidates with 0-3 years of experience is hired in Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, while mid-level hires are mostly made in Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi/NCR have the least proportion of senior-level hires as women. The cities that drive tech innovation such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune, employ most of the female talent analysed.

Careernet enables employers to foster gender diversity by placing an increasing number of women candidates over the past few years.
