CXOToday has engaged in an exclusive interview with Mr Hormazd Mistry , CEO,  ROI Institute of India

  1. Can you explain the importance of green skills in today’s workforce, and how can individuals acquire these skills through education and upskilling programs?

Green skills are essential for addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainability. These skills encompass various fields, such as renewable energy, environmental management, and sustainable design. Individuals can enrol in specialized courses, certifications, and workshops to acquire those skills. Many educational institutions and upskilling programs now offer environmentally focused curricula, empowering individuals to contribute to a more sustainable future while enhancing their employability.

  1. Many individuals are considering investing in education and upskilling to enhance their career prospects. What factors should they consider in terms of return on investment (ROI) when pursuing green skills training?

When investing in green skills training, individuals should weigh factors like program quality, relevance in the job market, cost, and potential career advancement. Ensure the chosen program aligns with sustainability trends and offers a strong ROI through increased employability, higher income, and contribution to environmental conservation. Careful consideration of these elements ensures a well-rounded ROI on green skills training.

  1. What are some examples of industries or job sectors where green skills are in high demand, and how can someone transition into these fields through education and upskilling initiatives?

Industries like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, new technology and environmental management are increasingly seeking professionals with Green Skills. Individuals can pursue relevant educational programs and upskilling initiatives to transition into these fields. They should focus on courses related to clean technologies, conservation, and sustainability practices, allowing them to meet the growing demand for environmentally conscious professionals.

  1. In the context of sustainability and environmental responsibility, how can educational institutions and employers collaborate to ensure that green skills are integrated into curricula and job requirements?

Collaboration between educational institutions and employers is paramount to embedding green skills into curricula and job requirements. This partnership can involve designing environmentally-focused coursework, internships, and workshops. Additionally, employers can prioritize hiring candidates with green skills, motivating students to acquire them. This collective effort supports sustainable practices and equips graduates with the skills to address environmental challenges.

  1. Are there any notable success stories or case studies of individuals who have achieved significant career advancements or financial gains as a result of obtaining green skills through education and upskilling?

There are numerous success stories of individuals who have witnessed remarkable career advancements and financial gains through green skill acquisition. The Government of India regularly publishes these success stories. For instance, Sanjeev Kumar completed a Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) and founded a company that manufactures fly ash bricks using a solar power plant. Fly ash is a waste product from coal-fired power plants and disposed of in landfills. Kumar’s business is flourishing and has created jobs for many.

6. How and where can one incorporate green skills training in the curriculum? At what age should one begin gaining green skills training?

Green skills training should be incorporated into curricula at all levels. It’s beneficial to start introducing environmental awareness and basic green skills from primary education. Topics like conservation, recycling, and sustainability can be integrated into science and social studies. Vocational training and online courses are also excellent platforms to deliver green skills education. Green skills are the need of the hour and everyone should learn those skills irrespective of their age.

7. How can the government and private sector pitch in to train workforce for “green skills”?

While the government already has initiatives “Green Skill Development Programme”, it needs to be brought to the limelight. The government should create incentives, such as tax breaks or subsidies, for companies investing in green skill trainings and jobs. Additionally, it can fund educational programs and promote green initiatives. The private sector can actively engage in creating training programs, apprenticeships, and on-the-job trainings to equip the workforce for a sustainable future.
